||
Morning sickness can keep you from getting the nutrients and energy you and your unborn baby need. Eat what you can and be sure to get enough fluids. You may find the following tips helpful. Eat small meals. Eat small meals throughout the day rather than eating fewer, larger meals. Eat small frequent meals and munch on small snacks throughout the day. If possible, don't skip meals. Opt for cold dishes. Cold food gives off fewer aromas. Eat what appeals to you. It is best, however, to avoid foods that are sweet, fried or fatty. Cook and freeze meals in advance of treatment to avoid cooking when you are not feeling well. Or have someone else cook for you. Try dry, bland foods, such as crackers and popcorn. Drink lots of fluids. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of fluids daily to avoid dehydration. Try cool beverages such as water, unsweetened fruit juices, tea or ginger ale that has lost its carbonation. It may help to drink small amounts throughout the day, rather than larger amounts less frequently. Sip fluids between rather than with meals to avoid stomach fullness at meal times. Try drinking chilled or frozen fluids. Freeze drinks in ice cube trays or as popsicles. Avoid caffeine containing beverages. Coffee and tea may worsen nausea. Caffeine is also a diuretic which means it helps eliminate fluids from the body and can cause dehydration. Better avoid these drinks. Avoid highly seasoned dishes. Avoid unpleasant smells. Take notice to what smells trigger nausea for you. For some, a specific smell, such as the smell of something frying or a greasy smell, may cause nausea. Other people may experience nausea when smelling any strong odour such as tobacco smoke, chemical preparations, cleaning agents or perfume. Limit exposure to unpleasant smells. Fresh air may help. Make yourself comfortable. After eating, rest, but do not lie flat for a couple of hours. Try wearing loose fitting clothing. Use relaxation techniques. Examples include meditation and deep breathing. |
