Can you please let me know if carbonated does the same as tap/mineral water. I find it difficult to drink mineral water but I can drink 2 litres of carbonated water without a problem. Also, your BMI, if you are big boned and have a bit of muscle is your BMI still worked out the same? |

There are many speculations about carbonated water. Some call it the thirst quencher while others name it as a slow poison. Consumption of these beverages may be a major factor in the development of osteoporosis. Carbonated beverages can also exacerbate a condition known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), which has been linked to oesophageal cancer. The lower oesophageal sphincter (LES) is a muscular valve at the bottom of the oesophagus which allows ingested material to move down into the stomach. It is designed to close and keep this material from coming back up. Where the stomach has an acid proof lining the oesophagus does not and is easily damaged by stomach acid. Carbonated beverages relax the LES allowing acid to reflux. Carbonated water in moderation is fine, but excess of it is certainly not good. Carbonated water can never function like the regular pure form of water. There is no replacement to pure and regular water. Having carbonated water once in a blue moon, or at times when you run out of options is fine. Carbonated water contains no nutritional ingredients that can benefit your body. Thus it is advisable to stay away from this drink. Carbonated water should be kept as an option when no pure regular water is available at hand. The BMI is a reliable indicator of total body fat, but it does have some limits. It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build or it may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass. When a person has a large frame size (big boned and a bit of muscle), a BMI in the upper range may be a good indication of what you should weigh. Higher BMI’s usually points to an increase in body fat and excess weight. |
